ioniTOUCH keyboards incorporate a silver glass phosphate antimicrobial additive into both:

  • the silicone rubber over‑moulding, and
  • the surface coating

This additive is impregnated throughout the material, not just applied as a surface spray, so it provides continuous antimicrobial activity for the lifetime of the product.

Regulatory status

  • The additive is BPR‑approved (EU Biocidal Products Regulation), meaning it is legally approved for antimicrobial use in the UK and EU.
  • It has passed efficacy testing against common healthcare pathogens including E. coli, MRSA, and Klebsiella pneumoniae.


Provides continuous, long‑lasting antimicrobial protection

On keypads, silver‑ion coatings:

  • Work continuously, not only at cleaning intervals
  • Offer permanent, built‑in protection when integrated into the material
  • Reduce bacteria growth by up to 99.9% on treated surfaces.
  • Several major ATM manufacturers introduced silver‑ion antimicrobial keypads during and after COVID‑19 as part of hygiene upgrades for high‑touch surfaces.

Why it’s effective for high‑touch interfaces like keypads

Keypads, ATM pads, access control pads, equipment controls etc, are touched frequently and can harbour large numbers of microbes. Silver‑ion technology helps by:

  • Reducing microbial load between cleaning
  • Enhancing hygiene in public‑use, high‑traffic environments
  • Offering a non‑wearing, embedded antimicrobial solution
